Moose On The Loose

Last Sunday was great sunny weather.  Although no wind for kiting, it was still a great day.  Met up with Chris at Midnight Sun Brewery for some afternoon suds and a good meal.

On the way in we noticed a sign that warned people of a young moose that has been hanging around the brewery.  Didn’t think much of it – spoiled as Alaskans are, moose are everywhere – even in town.

After a few tasty beverages and lunch on our way out, this little cutie was munching down on hops or barley or whatever was in the tote.  It was funny watching the moose lift the tarp up and going in for a mouthful.  It paid little attention to us as we walked by.

Gotta Love Alaska!

Skiing To Portage Glacier

With no wind to be found anywhere, I set out on skis and made my way across portage lake back to the Glacier.  It was eerily calm and I found myself slightly clumsy trying to remember how to cross country ski on wide back-country skis.

I took off from the staging area near the Whittier Tunnel on the north side of the lake.  There were only a few people out that i could see.  Although awesome I couldn’t stop thinking how much fun it would be kiting.

When I was a kid the face of Portage Glacier was all the back to where the Visitor Center is.  Amazing to see how it has receded nearly 3 miles in just 40 years.  Now instead of taking a drive to see the glacier, you have to add in a boat ride to get back to it.

The ski was good, it was exercise.  The glacier is awesome – massive ice walls you can get right up to and touch.  Hard to think in three weeks I’ll be trekking across the deserts of Southern California along the Pacific Crest Trail.  — uugh.

Sunday Kiting, Alaska Style!

So in my last post I showed you pictures my friend Jeff took of me.  Here are a few I took of other kiters and the people on the lake.  I took these in between getting setup and taking off.
