Something To Remember
February 15, 2010
Almost all of you know I’m an adventurer. Some of you know my last adventure of trekking across the island didn’t quite go as planned. Even less of you know I was rescued by the Coast Guard on that adventure and even less of you know that the pilot of the helicopter that hoisted Dakota and I up and flew us home is an amazing Uke player.
Shannon and I exchange sarcastic e-mails now and then but at the end of the day her and her crew did a fantastic job and I’ll forever remember them.
The image above was taken almost exactly above the point where they hoisted me up in Udamak Cove and the other is at a Open Mic night at the Cape Cheerful Lounge in the Grand Aleutian Hotel. She has joined us several times on stage and again is an amazing musician. Hopefully I won’t need to call upon her assistance this June when I try the trek again.
Shannon has a great collection of images online. Please visit her Shutter Fly site and say hello.
Jam Night & Two Pictures
February 14, 2010
I think tonight went really well. The whole band was there (I think I was late though) Everyone sounded great. The vocals from Shawna, Wendy and Sharron were excellent, both Jim on drums and Chris on guitar sounded real good. I had a great time again and I think I played well. I was caught off guard playing some songs we hadn’t practiced for almost a year though. Lots of applause’s after the songs, people dancing and yeah I got to sing again.
Ok, moving on…
I can’t say enough about the weather this weekend, I had some obligations to attend though (and not to mention my truck is in the shop) or I’d have some photos of being out on the water. I did manage to get some quick hikes in and of course I took the camera. Here are two taken this afternoon. The image to the left is of the docks at Unisea Inc. The boats shown are mostly Cod & Pollock boats. Some of them pull double duty also fishing for crab. The image below is looking northwest towards Broad Bay, with Devilfish Point to the left and just above it is the entrance to Nateekin Bay.
Friday At The Cape
February 13, 2010
Getting to perform with a band is so much fun. I’m playing with ‘Our Band’ again and last night we got together to
perform a short set at The Cape Cheerful Lounge for Open Mic. These images were taken from video captured on my iPhone by a fellow musician. He wasn’t able to get all the band, and not all the images are clear but I picked a few that I thought might come out.
We opened with Save Tonight by Eagle Eye Cherry, next was Firecracker by Ryan Adams, then Shut Up And Kiss me by (Oh I forgot). To close we performed The One I Love by R.E.M and I’m The Only One by Melissa Etheridge.
The Band as we performed is Wendy Hladic on Harmonica, Piano and Vocals, Chris Hladic on Guitar, Sharron O’Malley on Guitar and vocals, Shawna Rudio on Vocals, Jim Morris on Drums and I played the bass and sang The One I Love.
I’m sorry I was not able to pull any images of Chris and Jim off the video, but I’m sure there will more opportunities soon.
For those of you here in Unalaska, were going to get together tomorrow at the Harbor View Bar & Grill for Jam Night from 5pm to 10pm. Hopefully we can get a good recording or two and some more pictures.
Take Care Tom
February 2, 2010
I’m sad to say that Tom Goodwin has passed away. I had the fortunate pleasure and honor of playing with Tom over the last four years at Open Mic and Jam Nights. He loved the blues, country and rock. He was a great teacher and an excellent musician. Years ago during the first come, first serve fishing era he was a fixture in the local music scene playing night after night at Carls. Tom told me great stories of playing music back then and all around Alaska, even playing several bars in my home town of Kenai.
I was only able to find one picture of us playing at the sports bar, and as I recall it was Halloween a few years back. Tom Goodwin on guitar, Jim Fitch on the harp, Daniel Weirich on drums and I’m over there on the bass. I have video of the same performance somewhere. If I can find, it I’ll post it.
I can still here him singing and playing ‘Blues You Can Use’ and it feels like yesterday we were laying it down playing Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and one of our favorite tunes – Jenny Jenny (867-5309). Like so many others, I’m
going to miss him.
My thoughts and best wishes to his family and friends.
Well thanks to Darrell the video has been found. I thought it was of the Halloween performance as mentioned above, but as it turns out it was from a different night. Tom was an entertainer and always fun to play music with. My apologies for the quality of the audio and video, as I’ve been reminded it was taken on a cell phone.
Remembering Our Band
November 23, 2009
For a brief and really fun time I had the pleasure of playing bass guitar and singing for a local band here. The last time I
played with them was for the Aleutian Life Festival back in August. We did some great songs and I sang the One I Love by REM. Earlier in the year (or maybe it was last year) we played in the studio of KUCB during the annual fund raiser.
I was going through my mp3 collection (nearing 5000 now uuugh) when I came across four songs we did in the studio. Daniel the station programming manager recorded us as we played. It was great and I hope the other members of the band don’t mind that I put them up for you all to hear.
You can download or listen by clicking on each song.

Some Music
October 22, 2009
Last night I fired up my home studio to play around with some songs I’ve been trying to learn. Thinking that since KUCB is having live and pre-recorded musicians in over the last week to help support their fund raising efforts, if any of the songs recorded well they could use them.
I recorded (in my living room) acoustic versions of That Kind Of Girl by Mary Lou Lord, Wonder Wall by Oasis, Run Away by Del Shannon and a KUCB station ID using music from an original song I’m working on.
You should be able to listen to them here:
Del Shannon ~ Run Away

KUCB’s annual radio fundraiser is happening now, October 19-23 and the folks over at Unalaska Community Broadcasting have been hard at work to fill in all the details for an exciting and fun-filled event. As they mentioned, they will concentrate their fundraising efforts on Friday, the 23rd, but will be bringing you live music in the studio Monday through Thursday. Here’s the lineup so far, but stay tuned for more additions as other musicians get scheduled. In some cases, Daniel will be pre-recording artists who can’t be present in the studio. If you miss any performances, they are planning to replay as many as we can on Friday.
On Friday from 8 to 10am ALASKA TIME – you can hear yours truly and Darrell Lee Walker do our annual fund raising morning show for the station. You can of course dial us up on 89.7fm if your a local or if your online – listen to us live via the internet.
As always – thanks for your support! Unalaska Community Broadcasting is a non-profit and needs the support of people like you! (and me)…
Got The Time
September 24, 2009
Back in the late 1970s Joe Jackson wrote a song called Got The Time, I think I first heard it as a cover done by Anthrax. I always thought the song was great musically, never paying much attention to the lyrics. I was reflecting on all the small projects I’ve got myself in to now and I’m trying to figure how I’m going to end up with enough time to do them all. I suppose it will be a balance of working and playing until I’m all caught up, and I expect that I should not take on any more projects until for while.
I have Audio
July 31, 2009
I’ve been using the wordpress CMS software on my own server for years. I’m all about integration and seamless operations. Wordpress is by far the best in my opinion. I know most people use social networking sites to keep up with people and I think that is great. I prefer the have more control over the look and feel of my site – so I choose to remain somewhat of the rebel in that regard.
I’ve been looking for a long time for a while to add music to a post, mainly so that I can post songs that I record that I think people will like. IO thnk I found the code to do just that. This post should include Main Street by Bob Segar.
