Stephen,

Thanks for the comment. Uniktali is a great hike. Down near the only tree in that whole valley are a huge piles of the the old rommel stakes and barbed wire. Remnants of the old trail going down there is at the base of the mountain to the left of the tree all the way down to the water. I usually just go straight down, but if you go to the left you can barely see the trail. Also at the end of the reservoir instead of going down go right and follow that valley around. It's a great hike and will take you to the valley that Captains Bay is in. You can make a great circuit there by making your way to Shaisenekof lake and then coming back from the end of the bay, or if you have time - make your way from the lake to Portage Bay. Another great place. Only a few people a year (4 or 5) go back that far.

So as far as where all my pictures were taken - for sure I know that island from end to end. Lots of times I start on a trail and then take off on a ridge or valley. You tell me a pic and I'll tell you where it was and how to get there.

One of the things you will see is a trail map for the island. The only trails are around town and out to some bays. The treak across the island isn't a trail, in fact you have to cross the mountains, passes, valleys and bays on your own. Used a combination of a route that Jeff Hancock came up with and the path of least resistance to get over mountains. I use National Geographic Alaska map - the topos are good from Konets head (down by Chernofski) all the way to Cape Sarichef.

Another favorite loop I like to hike is from Ugadaga Bay around to Peace of Mind. Once you get to Ugadaga Head you will see the old Search Light and Fire Control Station. Bunkers just like on Ballyhoo, Eider Point and the same type of bunkers above Summers Bay, Bunker Hill and Constantine.

Constantine Point is awesome - although you can walk the shore from Morris Cover at a LOW TIDE or you can climb up and over to the bay, then make your way to the point. From there you need to climb UP. The station there has some great bunkers and old facilities. They are located half a quarter or so up on the cliff.

If you get a boat there is another awesome and super remote station to see. Out there just past Kalekta Bay on the point is a set of bunks that gets at least one visitor a year (ME) You can hike to it, but it is easily a three day trip if your in good shape. A five day trip for me.

Make a point to hike over to English Bay also and see the cows. Nothing special but not many people know that just a few miles away is a heard of cows. - everyone is fascinated with the horses.

Hiking over to Driftwood Bay is good. The old road starts at the base of Sugarloaf (18% grade) and goes all the way across to the old White Alice Radar site. Big Runway over there too. At Wislow there are a few bunkers up on the north point.

Those or points to visit. The whole island is worth trekking. Good or bad weather your never going to see many people out and hardly anyone but a few of us went off trail.

My favorite spot on the whole island is Kiluliak Bay on the otherside of Kashega. WHITE SAND - just like Hawaii except it's colder. My second favorite place is Pumicestone Bay. Next is Anderson Bay (even though this is where the coast guard had to come rescue me).

Jeff Hancock and Jeff Dickrell are the guys to meet. Kick ass outdoor, adventure seeking, handle anything kinda guys!

Sorry for the rant. The one thing I really liked there was getting out and trekking - exploring and getting away from town.

If you have questions about certain areas or want to know where some pics were taken, just email me.

Have a blast - the island is great! it's the people I don't like much ;)

Hi Dan -
I came across your website in a google search on Unalaska. Great pictures! I currently live in Unalaska (been here for about 6 weeks) and am looking for some adventurous hikes just like the ones you took while you were here. Last weekend I did Uniktali Bay. I was wondering if you know the exact locations of all of your pictures? Not necessarily GPS coordinates but what trail you took or what bay it was, etc. I recognize some of the spots from my short time here, but not all of them. And if you'd be willing to share I would appreciate it as I would love to explore those areas as well. Thanks,
