I spent a lot of hours researching the technical aspects of this adventure. Out of all the personal accounts and related websites that listed necessary items to bring along I have to say they ALL included sun screen. After the last three days above 6,000 feet for the better part of 8 hours each day… I’m toast. Really I mean it toast! My forearms and legs are a nice fire burnt red, my neck and face are about the same!
Needless to say I did NOT bring any sun screen, nor did I bring a ball cap.
This burn is about the same as my last trip to Hawaii or better yet my trip to Bonaire, oh this is going to hurt!
I’m in Linthal Switzerland now and I am going to take few days to “cool off” and see about finding some lotion for sun burns and a nice cap to keep the sun off of my face!
Not the best serial killer photo I could take but after ascending and descending 12,000 feet on a cloudless hot day in the Alps, it’s the best you get for now.
D.

Oh my – you’re going to peel for a month!
sigh….I cannot believe that you would forget to pack a hat! You seemed to be such an organized fellow when I met you.
El Sol does shine hard and brightly in other parts of the world, as you now know….{grin} You are just used to Unalaskan cloudy and foggy days.
Seriously, to take some of the heat out of your burn, if you have some isoprophyl rubbing alcohol, use it on the areas most affected and it will help reduce the heat and pain of the burn. Just apply every 1-2 hours.
It’s just one of those unexpected twists to your travel memoirs.
Sparky- that look is hot! Sorry couldn’t resist – don’t use rubbing alcohol – you’ll be sun burnt and have raw skin. If you can find some noxzema, and witch hazel mix equal parts – apply often. It’s like a York Peppermint Pattie for the skin. We use it in the ER. Safe journey – good karma.
Whoa… one word, dude. Dermatone. Little 2 oz. tubes of zinc-laden goodness and they don’t freeze if you keep ‘em in your bottle pockets.
I sunburnt the inside of my nostrils on a glacier a couple years ago, while climbing. I relived the pain, just looking at this photo.
Thanks for that. :)
