It Was Midnight

I spent an entire week in Fairbanks and further north.  Temperatures were 15 degrees during the day (I love the cold) and

Midnight In Unalaska ~ Dutch Harbor

-30 at night.  EVERY SINGLE DAY AND NIGHT were blue skies and star lit.  I never saw the Aurora (Northern Lights) once.  I practiced with my camera for weeks testing my routine for adjusting the Aperture and Shutter Speed on the Canon Power shot G10.  I was determined that if the lights were out, I’d get em.

Nope, nothing… nothing but bitter cold nights and semi-freezing cold days.  I knew it was a ‘bad’ year for the Aurora – but I still had high hopes of being out in the middle of the White Mountains capturing fantastic images of the lights and them bringing them back and showing them here, to you all on the ole blog.

Midnight In Unalaska ~ Dutch Harbor

Well you already know that didn’t happen.  A few nights ago however back home in Unalaska, the evening sky around midnight was clear and the moon shown bright out my living room window over Mt. Newhall, the Coastal Transportation Dock, and the Alyeska Seafoods Plant.  So I spent some time taking a few shots trying to capture the night.

Editors note (I’ve always wanted to say that)  If you have never seen the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) your missing out.  Whatever your doing, where ever you are, make a plan to visit a northern city, town or village in the dead of winter.  The lights are amazing and are just one of a few things so un-obtrusively impressive that they leave an everlasting impression upon you.
